cattle iron deficiency

Why Iron Is Essential for Healthy and Active Cattle?

Iron is required by the body in small amounts, but its deficiency can lead to many diseases. Along with manganese, copper, and zinc, iron is an essential trace metal that supports growth, health, and metabolism in animals. It also helps in antibiotic production. Iron is present in most foods, especially green leafy fodder like lucerne (a type of grass) and berseem, as well as meat. Cattle need about 50 mg of iron per kg of fodder; a cow consuming 13 kg of feed daily requires around 650 mg of iron.

Presence of iron in the body of animals

Most of the iron in cattle accumulates in two places. The first is haemoglobin, a protein found in a red blood cell that transports oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body. The second is myoglobin which is a protein present in muscle cells and stores and distributes oxygen as per need. Iron also helps make vital proteins and enzymes that run the cells’ power centres in the mitochondria.

Hidden Causes of Falling Milk Yield: Iron Deficiency in Animals

Blood-sucking insects also extract important nutrients. Since iron is essential for the formation of haemoglobin in the blood, repeated biting can lead to iron deficiency in animals, which can lead to anaemia. Amount of haemoglobin in milch animals should be 7 to 14 grams per 100 ML of blood. Apart from this, iron deficiency also occurs due to increasing use of urea, use of harvesters and lack of green fodder. Due to deficiency of iron, milch animals like cow, buffalo, goat, sheep, camel start giving less milk and symptoms like lethargy, loss of appetite, lack of growth, falling down etc. start appearing in them. These symptoms are indicative of diseases like hepatic dysfunction, low appetite, hepatitis, jaundice, anaemia, cirrhosis of the liver, fatty liver syndrome, anorexia due to sluggish liver.
